Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
