The defendant pleaded guilty to 17 charges at the judicial center on Friday

A man who spiked sweets with tranquilliser and gave them to youngsters at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offenses against two boys aged nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and an older person experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on Friday.

Nevertheless, he denied a single sexual charge he was facing, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, outlined the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a youth camp which he managed.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the minors, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and request they to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the young males "for many years", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She explained Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had suspicions in summer 2025.

The legal representative continued: "This year his stepchild had worries about the activities, justifiably.

"They chose" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said objects including infant oil, Vaseline and medical needles were located, and his stepchild notified the law enforcement about his worries.

She stated the defendant went on to play the "sweet game" with six youngsters that evening - that Saturday - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"The police had not gone out by that stage," she added.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson called the authorities a second time.

She said the defendant then played the "candy game" in a space of five children.
