EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
